Mixed Media Monthly Challenge #14 Reveal | Summer Days

Hey Everyone! I've been under the weather for the past few days but I'm on the mend. Not sure what I had ? virus - the standard response when I don't have a clue! Thanks to my co-workers for putting up with me and helping me out! I now have the next week off so I'm glad I'm better. July first means a new challenge over on the Mixed Media Monthly Challenge Blog. The theme is "Summer Days"!! How fun, right?! The possibilities are endless - like I wish the summer was. I decided to create a canvas to feature a photo taken by a great friend, photographer Heather Chick. The photo is of her adorable kids who I have used ALOT in my scrapbook pages over the years. I printed the photo on white Sticky Back Canvas to give the photo some texture. I also printed it in black and white to contrast the colors of ink sprays I chose. Here's my canvas ...

I love all the yummy texture on this canvas. Instead of gesso, I prepped the canvas with Golden's Fiber Paste - this adds luscious texture. I then added various items (lace, punchinella, cheese cloth, washi tape) for more texture - the more you add the more the inks will pool in all the "nooks and crannies" of the canvas. The lines were created by using Tim Holtz "Stripes" Layering stencil and Ranger's Texture paste. I then added some ink sprays by painting the ink on and letting it drip down the stenciled lines. Here's some close-ups ...

I used ink sprays to color the flowers and the resin pieces as well ...

Aren't Heather's kids the absolute cutest?!?!

WOW I totally love the texture in the background. Im so trying this out (although I need to buy some more modelling paste). Im thinking maybe I will try getting a similar effect by dragging a folk through the paste since I don't own that stencil. Inspired me to use photographs more in my canvases too.

Heather's children are definitely adorable. Love all the layers of texture and bright colors on your canvas. Tim's stencil and texture paste with the colorful colors you used is beautiful. Wonderful how the picture of Heather's kids remains the focal point. Beautiful canvas.

Absolutely amazing! This is a beautiful piece of art, and thank-you so much for explaining how you made it. As someone just starting out with mixed media, it helps so much to have the process explained. I love the idea of printing the photo on the canvas, that's something I really want to try. The effect is wonderful!

This is SO stunning! The rainbow colors contrasting with black and white photograph is scrumptious. The level of depth in your texture is so beautiful. Love how you created the 'streaking' technique. Thank you so much for the inspiration on this challenge.

Ohhhhhh - this is FABULOUS Lynn. Love the way you used Tim's stencil and made the colors in sections too. And all that texture is just WONDERFUL. I would never have thought to use the doily on a summer creation but it makes perfect sense. My mind immediately went back to Mama serving lemonade in the summer and there were always doilies (back before air conditioning!!!). Lemonade - always made from scratch - never tasted so good!!! Thanks bunches for the memories and the FUN inspiration you created. j.
